From Garvey to Marley: Rastafari Theology by Noel Leo Erskine

Book Publisher's Comments
The history of the theology and rituals of Rastafarianism features accents of the reggae rhythms of Bob Marley and the teachings and philosophy of Marcus Garvey, the black nationalist who motivated many of his fellow Jamaicans to embrace their African ancestral roots. The author, a theologian raised in the Jamaican village in which the Rastafarian faith originated, offers a serious inquiry into the movement with the perspective of an insider. Marley, who died in 1981, is the best known and one of the most articulate exponents of the themes of race consciousness that provide the core of Rasta hermeneutics. The poet and musician also made the faith appealing to the Jamaican middle class, which had turned away from the Back to Africa message that Garvey delivered in the 1930s. Noel Erskine isolated and defines the main tenets of Rastafarianism, which emerged toward the end of the 20th century as a way of life and as a new international religion. He includes biographical descriptions of the key players in the development of Rastafari theology, provides details of its organization and ethos, and discusses the role of women in the religion, Examining the religion's relationship to Christianity, Erskine relates the Rastas to 19th-century Nature Baptist and Revivalist traditions on the island and to the black theology movement in the United Status. The Rastas see the European and North American churches as representatives of an oppressive colonial class, he writes. The Rastafarian name for God-Jah-is derived from, Yahveh, the God of the Hebrews, and members of the faith connect their struggle for dignity and solidarity in Jamaican society with the struggle of the oppressed Israelites. Jah and not the Bible is the decisive source of morality and truth for the Rastas.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Rockers International-Program Overview

It is generally agreed that the success of Bob Marley paved the way for Caribbean Music to be played on the radio, here in North America, with regularity. Started in 1984, from the studios of WRFG 89.3FM (Atlanta), Rockers International (Rockers) has evolved into an extremely popular three-hour high-energy music/community news show that caters to diverse tastes in Caribbean music. It is well known that the Caribbean produces some of the most vibrant forms of music, including calypso, mento, zouk, ska, reggae, soca, compas, and salsa. While other genres are played and experienced elsewhere at WRFG, Rockers has successfully focussed on reggae, ska, calypso, mento, and soca.

Program Goals

* To preserve the rich musical legacy started by artists like Trinidad's Lord Creator and Fitzvaughn Bryan (1950s), Cuba's Perez Prado (1960s) and Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley (1960s) from Jamaica.

* To expose our audience to palatable (mature) musical trends originating from, or having some connection to the Caribbean, and see where they fit into the world musical discussion.

* To be a mouthpiece of and for the community we serve.

Our Audience

Rockers International attracts and caters to a mature (over 30) demographic, including people of Caribbean origin-though not necessarily born in the region-and friends of the Caribbean. A large percentage of our audience sees Rockers as a way of connecting to their respective homelands. Recent unscientific surveys have shown that we continue to attract an increasing number of younger listeners.

We develop and maintain the interest of our audience by (a) offering quality programming, with the belief that the tastes of our audience and ourselves will converge; (b) listeners telling their friends that we exist; and (c) being an integral part of the community and its events.

Program Format

Rockers International is a three-hour hybrid show consisting of a high-energy mixture of cultural, soca, ska/mento/rock-steady, and more current recorded music mixed with interviews- or news-of artists and other professionals, relevant to the needs of the community being served.

So much of the Caribbean music we play speaks to the affairs of the public we serve. Music by the legendary Marley, for example, spoke of oppression of the poor in North America, Africa and Jamaica; the oppressors-and the price of their folly; and the need for the oppressed to "get up stand up, stand up for your rights." It is not an exaggeration to say that Marley had some say in Zimbabwe's independence. More recently, we have had reggae artists like Sizzla, VC and Tanya Stephens, separately, speaking/singing about the corruption in the church, gangsters in Jamaica, and the moral decay of our society in powerfully moving examples of modern day poetry. Clearly, one of the easiest and least expensive ways to educate or engage an audience is through music.
