On July 15, 1973, WRFG began its first broadcast on 89.3 FM with programs highlighting Black, LGBTQ, and Women’s Liberation, class struggles and Appalachian life, African poetry, Jazz, Blues, and Folk music, and neighborhood news from Kirkwood to L5P. From the beginning it was an eclectic station that aired progressive information and music the major broadcasters wouldn’t touch. But our mighty vision had a not so mighty wattage and only those in the surrounding neighborhood could tune in.
With every technological advancement that WRFG experienced since its first pirate radio days to the 100,00 Watt license of today, it has always been our Mission which has guided the use of this resource. As social and political movements continued to shape the language and understandings of class struggle, WRFG continued to evolve our Mission and ourselves along with the liberation movements of each decade.
Within every great movement and society, we would be nothing without the cultural contributions of music. To this day we continue to not only broadcast music from around the world, but we continue to highlight the working class struggles abroad and how they impact us here at home. Fifty-years of broadcasting is an enormous feat for a station like WRFG. We are the only independent, non-commercial, community radio in Atlanta and have had 100% volunteers broadcasting on our airwaves since day one. What may have been an experiment in 1973 has become a mighty institution.
For our 50th year, we are looking to the community members and organizations who not only believe in WRFG as a resource, but also believe in seeing this year as an opportunity to propel the station into our next 50 years. Please take sometime to look over the Sponsorship Tiers located on the other side of this page, use the QR code for more information, and contact us to discuss any contribution you would like to make outside of the suggested tiers.

A hundred dollars is no small amount and the cost of certain necessary broadcasting items begins at this threshold. A hundred dollars could buy one pair of studio headphones or a half dozen microphone cables needed for our on-air broadcasting and production. You know all those software subscriptions add up too.
Sponsor WRFG at this level and receive an acknowledgement on-air and on our website, as well as an RSVP for two tickets in the side section EE through RR in the loge or HH through RR in the center loge.
Five hundred dollars lets us know that you understand that quality in-studio microphones are as important as the content being spoken in them. This is around the cost of a brand new studio microphone. Outside of the studio, this type of sponsorship level helps cover the cost of printing merchandise, so listeners can show off their favorite community radio station. Five hundred dollars also happens to be around how much our monthly electricity bill is at our transmitter site and the cost to keep an Engineer on call.
Those contributing at this sponsorship level will receive a Thank You in a recorded on-air announcement and our website, a 50th Anniversary T-Shirt or poster, and an RSVP for two tickets in the side section EE through RR in the loge or HH through RR in the center loge.
A one thousand dollar sponsorship is really getting into the meat of our monthly expenses. This amount represents half of our current total in facilities rental at the Little Five Points Community Center, where WRFG has called home for about 40 years.
Sponsor us during our 50th Anniversary at this level and we will record an on-air and website Thank You, a 50th Anniversary T-Shirt and poster, and (2) reserved seats in section EE through GG in the center loge. If you are an organization, we will provide a month of Underwriting or PSAs.
Two thousand five hundred dollars is half of our monthly tower rental fee. When it comes to our FM signal, it’s all about being up on that tower and being able to reach your communities
Sponsors at this level will receive a recorded on-air and website Thank You, a 50th Anniversary T-Shirt and poster, and two reserved seats anywhere in the Orchestra section. If you are an organization, we will provide Underwriting and PSAs for two quarters of your choosing.
A five thousand dollar sponsorship pays for one month of our tower rent. We are the only independent and non-profit community radio station in Atlanta with the type of reach we have and that is because those of service in WRFG’s past knew the importance of taking us from a tiny wattage only heard in the Little Five Points neighborhood, to the beacon of progressive media that you can turn your FM dial to. We pay respect to those who have put in the labor to get us here by sustaining this signal and making sure that we are heard by those who need us.
Sponsors at this level will receive a recorded on-air and website Thank You, a 50th Anniversary T-Shirt and poster, and four reserved seats anywhere in the Orchestra section. If you are a business, we will also throw in a year contract for Underwriting or PSAs.
Ten thousand dollars. Organizing a 50th Anniversary event for WRFG to share with our community has a financial cost. Ten thousand dollars ensures that not only can we have an accessible facility with the professional production quality and crew like the Rialto, but we can also support the artists and not deplete our stations operating funds. We know that not everyone can make this level, but for those who can – your sponsorship is a powerful contribution during a monumental moment for community radio.
Sponsors at this level will receive a recorded on-air and website Thank You, a 50th Anniversary T-Shirt and poster, and eight reserved seats anywhere in the Orchestra section. If you are a business, we will also throw in a year contract for Underwriting or PSAs.
